Understanding the difference between skin purging and breaking out can help you take the right steps to take care of your skin. Today we will be discussing the difference between skin purging and breaking out to help you determine what your skin is experiencing.

What Is Skin Purging?
Typically, your skin will purge if you have changed some sort of factor in your life. This could include diet, lifestyle change, skin care product, or medication. Often, skin purging is most experienced due to certain ingredients. Skin purging occurs when there is an increased skin cell turnover rate. Your skin eliminates all the accumulated dead skin cells, chemicals, and dirt that has been immersed by your skin. When your skin purges it brings all the blockage to the surface of your skin which may come in the form of blackheads, white heads, cysts, and other types of pimples.

What Is Breaking Out?
Breaking out occurs when your pores get clogged with oils and dead skin cells. Breaking out can occur for several reasons such as lifestyle changes, reaction to makeup, sensitivity to certain skin care products, and hormonal changes. Some ways to reduce breaking out includes staying hydrated, using non-comedogenic products, eating a balanced diet, showering daily, and using products appropriate for your skin type. Often, individuals will break out due to using the wrong skin care products. For instance, if you have oily skin and are using products that target dry skin you may be increasing your skin’s oil production and thus resulting in breaking out.

Purging Vs. Breaking Out: What's the Difference?
The best way to determine if your skin is purging or breaking out is the length of time. If you have just introduced a new skin care product into your routine your skin may purge for 6 weeks. If your skin does not clear up after this time period, it may be a sign that you need to eliminate this product out of your routine. If you notice blemishes occurring in usual areas of your body but see the areas improving this is a sign that your skin is purging. However, if your skin begins to break out in new areas of your body and does not improve, this is a sign your skin is breaking out. Another way to differentiate purging and breaking out is that breakouts may appear swollen and be painful, while purging does not usually result in pain or swelling.
